Public Arts Supplement Sample Notes
Overview
The IPUMS CPS Public Arts Supplement contains information about respondents’ training in, exposure to, and participation in the arts over the last year. Some topics covered include number of books read, types of art and music classes taken, and numbers of visits to theatres, concerts, museums, and art galleries. This IPUMS CPS supplement combines data from two supplements which ask about many of the same topics, the Public Participation in the Arts and Annual Arts Benchmarking surveys. The August 2002, May 2008, July 2012, July 2017, and July 2022 samples contain data from the "Public Participation in the Arts" supplement. The February 2013-2016, 2018, and 2020 samples contain data from the "Annual Arts Benchmarking Survey" supplement.
Survey Designs
Though they cover many of the same subjects, the Public Participation in the Arts and the Annual Arts Benchmarking Survey vary substantially in their design. The Annual Arts Benchmarking survey contains a single set of questions that is asked of a subset of CPS respondents aged 18 and older from between one quarter and one half of surveyed households, depending on the year. The Public Participation in the Arts surveys are often more complex within a given year and vary more in their design across years. The Public Participation in the Arts surveys from 2008, 2012, 2017, and 2022 divide supplement respondents among one or more core question sets and several modules that cover specific topics. In these samples, no respondent answers all modules and no modules are answered by all respondents. This survey design has implications for weighting; these are discussed in the next section.
Sample Descriptions

Sample | Description |
2002 | Supplement questions were asked of all civilians 18 or older who were in month-in-samples (MISH) four and eight. |
2008 | Questions were asked of two randomly selected household civilians aged 18 or older in month-in-samples (MISH) four and eight. If the selected persons had adult civilian spouses or partners in the household, then questions were also asked of the spouses/partners. The 2008 supplement contains one set of core questions, and six modules, one of which is called the "special core." If the randomly selected household members had a spouse or partner in the household, these individuals were included in the core questionnaire, the "special core," and module C. The core questions were given to all supplement respondents, but each module contains only a portion of the selected supplement participants. |
2012 | Questions were asked of two randomly selected household civilians aged 18 or older in month-in-samples (MISH) three, five, seven, and eight. If the selected persons had adult civilian spouses or partners in the household, then questions were also asked of the spouses/partners. The 2012 supplement consists of two cores and six modules. Each core contained half of all supplement respondents. all supplement respondents are not included in all modules, and spouses and partners of originally randomly selected respondents are only included in the core questionnaire, module A1, and module D. |
2013-2016, 2018 | A single set of questions were asked of the first household civilian aged 18 or older and another randomly selected household civilian aged 18 or older from households in month-in-samples (MISH) three and seven. If the selected persons had adult civilian spouses or partners in the household then questions were also asked of the spouses/partners. |
2017 | Questions were asked of one randomly selected civilian household member aged 18 or older from households in month-in-samples (MISH) three, four, seven, and eight. The 2017 supplement consists of two core and five modules. Respondents were randomly assigned to one core and two of five modules. |
2020 | A single set of questions were asked of the first household civilian aged 18 or older and another randomly selected household civilian aged 18 or older from households in month-in-samples (MISH) two, three, six, and seven. If the selected persons had adult civilian spouses or partners in the household then questions were also asked of the spouses/partners. |
2022 | Questions were asked of one randomly selected civilian household member aged 18 or older from households in month-in-samples (MISH) three, four, seven, and eight. The 2022 supplement consists of two core and four modules. Respondents were randomly assigned to one core and two of four modules. |
For an overview of these sample designs, see Table 1 in Weighting the IPUMS CPS Public Arts Supplement.
Weighting
The Public Arts supplement has nine harmonized weights: PASUPPWT, PASUPPWT2, PASUPPWTA, PASUPPWTA2, PASUPPWTB, PASUPPWTC, PASUPPWTD, PASUPPWTE, and PASUPPWTX. See Table 7 of Weighting the IPUMS CPS Public Arts Supplement for which weight goes with which module in 2008, 2012, and 2017. PASUPPWT is the only available weight for all other years.
Which weight a user should apply depends on what combination of samples and variables are included in their analysis. Table 8 in Weighting the IPUMS CPS Public Arts Supplement shows which module to which each Public Arts supplement variable belongs in 2008, 2012, and 2017 along with the corresponding weight variable. Table 8 is reproduced below. The reproduced table includes the survey location and appropriate weight value for the 2022 variables.

Because of the numerous ways in which Public Arts variables may be studied across time and in conjunction with each other, IPUMS CPS cannot offer harmonized weights for all possible combinations. In these situations involving cross-module analysis, users must apply the appropriate cross-module adjustment factors to the unharmonized weights. To facilitate this work, IPUMS CPS also offers eight unharmonized weight variables (UH_CWGT_S1, UH_MWGT_S1, UH_PWAWGT_S1, UH_PWNWGT_S1, UH_PWOWGT_S1, UH_PWSWGT_S1, UH_PWTWGT_S1, and UH_PWSUPWGT_S1) and tables of all possible cross-module combinations in 2008, 2012, and 2017 (see tables 4, 5, and 6 in Weighting the IPUMS CPS Public Arts Supplement).
For more information on weighting the IPUMS CPS Public Arts supplement and example code, see Weighting the IPUMS CPS Public Arts Supplement.
