Description

PMUSLYR reports whether the person took music lessons - either voice or training or playing an instrument - and/or music appreciation lessons during the last 12 months.

This variable is part of the Public Arts Supplement.

PMUSLYR is a Module D variable in the May 2008 sample and a Module E variable in the July 2012 sample. For more information on cores, modules, and weighting Public Arts variables, please see Weighting the IPUMS CPS Public Arts Supplement.

Comparability

For 2002, 2008, and 2012, this variable is created based on responses to two separate questions. First, respondents were asked whether they had taken music lessons, either voice or training or playing an instrument, in the last year. Second, they were asked whether they had taken music appreciation lessons in the last year.

For 2013 and 2015, respondents were asked a single question about whether they had taken music or music appreciation lessons in the last year

Supplement universes vary across years. The May 2008, July 2012, and July 2017 Public Arts Supplement has substantial differences in structure compared to other months. The May 2008, July 2012, and July 2017 surveys are divided into core and module sections. Which respondents and which variables are included in which core and module varies across years.
