Description

VLTORG5 indicates the type of organization the respondent reported volunteering with for organization #5. Researchers may also be interested in the number of weeks per year the respondent spent volunteering for organization #5 (VLWTORG5) and the number of hours per week the respondent spent volunteering for the same organization (VLHTORG5). The same information is available for up to seven volunteer organizations.

Information is also available for the types of activities the respondent participated in with the organization he/she spent the most time volunteering for, which is considered the "main" organization.  Activities include administrative tasks (VLADMIN), building physical structures (VLBUILD), coaching sports (VLCOACH), being a member of a committee (VLCOMMITTEE), providing counsel or medical aid (VLCOUNSEL), providing food (VLFOOD), fundraising (VLFUND), providing non-food goods (VLGOODS), mentoring youth (VLMENTOR), performing music or art (VLPERFORM), tutoring (VLTUTOR), ushering (VLUSHER), or other (VLOTHER).

This variable is part of the Volunteer Supplement.

Comparability

This variable is comparable across samples. In 2005 an additional type of organization (Immigrant/refugee assistance organization) was added to the list.
