Description

VLCOMMITTEE indicates whether participating as a member of a board or committee was part of the respondent's volunteer opportunities with the main organization, which is determined by the greatest number of hours volunteered in the past year. Researchers could use VLWTORG1 through VLWTORG7 (weeks in the last year volunteered with at a given organization) and VLHTORG1 through VLHTORG7 (hours per week spent volunteering at a given organization) to calculate an annual total and identify the main organization. The annual hours spent volunteering by the main organization is also reported in VLHMAINORG.

Comparability

In 2002, the question was stated as "serve as an unpaid member of a board, committee, or neighborhood association", while from 2003 onward, the question was "provide professional or management assistance including serving on a board or committee".
