Description

VLCOACH indicates whether coaching, refereeing, or supervising a sports team was part of the respondent's volunteer opportunities with the main organization, which is determined by the greatest number of hours volunteered in the past year. Researchers could use VLWTORG1 through VLWTORG7 (weeks in the last year volunteered with at a given organization) and VLHTORG1 through VLHTORG7 (hours per week spent volunteering at a given organization) to calculate an annual total and identify the main organization. The annual hours spent volunteering by the main organization is also reported in VLHMAINORG.

Comparability

From 2002 to 2004, the question was worded as "coach, referee, tutor, or teach", while 2005 onward is stated as "coaching, refereeing, or supervising a sports team".
