Description
GOTVDISA indicates whether respondents who received veterans' payments during the previous calendar year received VA Disability Compensation. VA Disability Compensation is a monetary benefit paid to a veteran who was disabled by injury or disease incurred or aggravated in the line of duty during active military service.
Comparability
This variable is comparable over time.
Other variables available for 1989-2005 identify recipients of alternative forms of veterans' payments: GOTVEDUC (for recipients of veterans' educational assistance); GOTVPENS (for recipients of veterans' pensions); GOTVSURV (for recipients of veterans' survivor benefits); and GOTVOTHE (for recipients of other veterans' payments).
For 1988-2005, additional variables collect information on disability benefits from sources other than the Veterans Administration. These include SRCDISA1, SRCDISA2, INCDISA1, and INCDISA2.
For 1988-2005, the total amount of income individuals received from veterans' payments of all types during the previous calendar year is specified in INCVET. For years prior to 1988, the amount of income received from veterans' payments is grouped with other sources of income in INCUNERN (for 1962-1967) and in INCGOV (for 1968-1987). While the monetary value of veterans' payments cannot be determined for individuals prior to 1988, recipients of veterans' payments during the preceding calendar year are identified by the GOTVETPA variable for 1976-1987.
