Description

GOTVETPA indicates whether the respondent received income from payments from the Veterans Administration during the previous calendar year. For 1976-1987, the specific amount of income from veterans' payments cannot be identified. In these years, dollar figures for income from veterans' payments were combined with income from other government programs (such as unemployment compensation and worker's compensation) in the INCGOV variable. Prior to 1988, therefore, the amounts received from veterans' payments cannot be identified, but researchers can analyze the characteristics of the recipients of veterans' payments.

Comparability

This variable is largely comparable over time. For 1976-1979 only, interviewers specified that military retirement benefits were to be excluded. Persons receiving income from U.S. military retirement pensions (which are paid after twenty years of active duty in the U.S. armed forces, are not means-tested, and are not administered by the Veterans Administration) can be identified via the GOTMILRP variable for 1976-1987.

Beginning in 1988, the amount of income received, during the previous calendar year, from veterans' payments (including service-related disability compensation, survivor benefits, pensions, and educational allowances) is reported in the INCVET variable. Persons with income in INCVET (i.e., those with values between 1 and 99998 in that variable) for 1988 on can be compared to persons with a yes response (code 2) in GOTVETPA for 1976-1987.

For 1989-2005, researchers can identify the recipients of specific types of veterans' benefits, using the following variables: GOTVEDUC (for recipients of veterans' education assistance); GOTVSURV (for recipients of veterans' survivor benefits); GOTVPENS (for recipients of veterans' pensions); GOTVDISA (for recipients of veteran's disability compensation); and GOTVOTHE (for recipients of other veterans' payments).
