Description

GOTVOTHE indicates whether respondents who received veterans' payments during the previous calendar year received some form of compensation from the Veterans Administration other than educational assistance, survivor benefits, disability compensation, or a VA pension. Most income transfers from the VA fall within one of these four specific categories, not in a residual "other" category.

Comparability

This variable is comparable over time.

In addition to this residual "other" category, four variables available for 1989 onward identify recipients of specific forms of veterans' payments: GOTVEDUC (for recipients of veterans' educational assistance); GOTVSURV (for recipients of veterans' survivor benefits); GOTVDISA (for recipients of veterans' disability compensation); and GOTVPENS (for recipients of veterans' pensions). For 1988 onward, the amount of income individuals received from veterans' payments during the previous calendar year is specified in INCVET. For years prior to 1988, the amount of income received from veterans' payments is grouped with other sources of income in INCUNERN (for 1962-1967) and in INCGOV (for 1968-1987). While the monetary value of veterans' payments cannot be determined for individuals prior to 1988, recipients of veterans' payments during the preceding calendar year are identified by the GOTVETPA variable for 1976-1987.
