Metropolican Area Codes: May 2025 onward
Beginning in May of 2025, the CPS began to phase in a new sample based on the results of the 2020 Census. New CBSA defintitions are also phased in with new PSUs with each new MIS rotation. This phase in will be complete in August of 2026; in the intervening months, CPS rotation groups that have entered the sample since MAy 2025 will use the new CBSA definitions and all other groups will still have CBSA designations based on the 2010 Census.
Note that some metropolitan areas, while retaining the same code between the 2010 and 2020 OMB codes, have adjusted boundires between the two deliniations. As a result, estimates may be affected by this change even for metro areas that have consitent codes across vintages. In addition, the State of Connecticut is no longer using the county based CBSA definitions and instead base CBSA definitions on the State's Planning Regions. Seven of these regions are metropolitan based and combined into five metropolitan CBSAs that are identified individually on the PUFs. There are also two Planning Regions that are nonmetropolitan.
