Metropolitan area codes: 1977-1985

The 44 Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSAs) identified in the ASEC and BMS are those delineated for the 1970 Decennial Census of Population and Housing, with the exception of the Nassau-Suffolk, NY SMSA. The Nassau-Suffolk, NY SMSA was first delineated in November 1972. Except for Nassau-Suffolk, these SMSAs do not reflect territorial changes resulting from the 1970 Census or redefinitions by OMB since that time. The population residing in the SMSAs constitutes the metropolitan population shown in various census publications.
