Description

VLOTHER indicates that an activity other than the options given was part of the respondent's volunteer opportunities with the main organization, which is determined by the greatest number of hours volunteered in the past year. Researchers could use VLWTORG1 through VLWTORG7 (weeks in the last year volunteered with at a given organization) and VLHTORG1 through VLHTORG7 (hours per week spent volunteering at a given organization) to calculate an annual total and identify the main organization. The annual hours spent volunteering by the main organization is also reported in VLHMAINORG.

This variable is part of the Volunteer Supplement.

Comparability

As variable that captures all activities not explicitly given as options, VLOTHER will differ in samples where the activity options differ. In 2002, other options for activities included environmental protection, emergency preparedness or relief, public health or safety, transportation, and event organization (these variables have not been harmonized for IPUMS-CPS). These options were not included in later samples, and could be included in the other category in samples 2003 and later.
