Description
BINCCARD reports whether or not anyone in the household received income that was directly deposited or electronically transferred to a prepaid card in a typical month over the past 12 months.
BINCCARD is part of a series of variables about ways income was received during the past 12 months. Related variables include BINCACCT, BINCCASH, BINCCHECK, and BINCOTH. Though respondents who answered that the household had no income during past 12 months were asked no further questions about income types, these households are coded as "Did not receive income" in all variables in this series.
This variable is part of the Unbanked/Underbanked Supplement.
Comparability
In 2015, a user note in the CPS documentation states that due to an issue with survey administration, this question "was not asked of households that used a prepaid card in the past 12 months, received income in a typical month, and were longer term unbanked (i.e., unbanked and did not have a bank account at any point in the 12 months before the survey)." 540 households were affected.
Investigation of the data reveals that the 540 affected households are actually those who reported prepaid card use in the past 12 months, did not currently have bank accounts and had not had an account during the past 12 months, and did not explicitly state they had no income in the past 12 months.
All 540 households were coded as "No response" for BINCCARD in 2015.
Universe
- Households that report having or not having bank accounts that had a prepaid card within the last 12 months and have a respondent aged 15 or older who has knowledge of household finances.
