INCPEN1 is a 7-digit numeric variable.
9999999 = NIU
The Census Bureau applies different disclosure avoidance measures across time for individuals with high income in this variable. Detailed explanations of these methods, topcodes, and replacement value and swap value thresholds are available here.
Description
INCPEN1 reports the amount of pension income received by respondents during the previous calendar year, from the source identified in SRCPEN1. For example, if the source of payments identified in SRCPEN1 were "Company pension" (code 1), then INCPEN1 would report the amount of income received from that 401k account during the previous calendar year. For those persons who reported receiving pension income from a second source in SRCPEN2, INCPEN2 similarly reports the amount of pension income received from that second source during the previous calendar year.
Comparability
This variable is comparable across time.
In the 2019, retirement income and pension income are split into two different sets of questions. Prior to that year, retirement and pension income sources are combined and reported in SRCRETI1 and SRCRETI2 and the income received from these sources is reported in INCRETI1 and INCRETI2, respectively. For pension income sources from 2019 on are reported in SRCPEN1 and SRCPEN2 and the income received from these sources is reported in INCPEN1 and INCPEN2, respectively.
