BTAXLOAN12M indicates whether anyone in the household has taken out a tax refund anticipation loan in the last 12 months.
This variable is part of the Unbanked/Underbanked Supplement.
Comparability
In 2011 and 2013 only those who reported ever having taken out a tax loan were asked BTAXLOAN12M.
2015 forward include the clarification "or used a tax preparation service to receive your tax refund faster than the IRS would provide it".
In 2019-forward, nonresponses to Unbanked/Underbanked Supplement questions were allocated based on households with similar demographics. The data quality flag for BTAXLOAN12M is QBTAXLOAN12M.

- Jun 2011 and Jun 2013: Households that indicated anyone had ever taken out a tax refund anticipation loan, report having or not having bank accounts, and have a respondent age 15 or older, who has knowledge of household finances.
- Jun 2015, Jun 2017, Jun 2019, Jun 2021, and Jun 2023: Households that report having or not having bank accounts, and have a respondent age 15 or older, who has knowledge of household finances.
