Description

BFINPART indicates the extent to which the household member participating in the supplement participates in the household's financial decisions. Note that this variable is valid at the household level, and there is no indication of which household member actually answered this question. This variable does not indicate the financial decision participation of each household member.

This variable is part of the Unbanked/Underbanked Supplement.

Comparability

The question wording is comparable across all years.

The question order and universe of the variable does change across years. In 2009 this question is the third question in the supplement after the questions BUNBANKED and BFINSHARE. In 2011+ it is the second question of the supplement after BFINSHARE.

The universe stated in the CPS documentation and empirical universes differ for this variable. The stated universe for this variable is the same for all years; multi-adult households with a respondent age 15 or older, who reported that the adults in the household either shared finances in some way, or that the respondent did not know or refused to answer the question (BFINSHARE = 1, 2, DK, or RF).

In 2009, the empirical universe is the same as the stated universe, with the additional universe inclusion of "No Response" responses for the household finance sharing question (BFINSHARE = -9), and the universe restriction that only households who responded "Yes" or "No" to whether or not the household had a bank account (BUNBANKED = 1 or 2) were in universe.

In 2011+, the empirical universe is the same as the stated universe, with the additional universe inclusion of "No Response" responses for the household finance sharing question (BFINSHARE = -9).
