Description
BFINSHARE indicates the extent to which adult household members share finances.
This variable is part of the Unbanked/Underbanked Supplement.
Comparability
The variable wording is comparable across all years.
The question order and universe of the variable does change across years.
In 2009 this is the second question in the supplement after the only screening question (BUNBANKED). The stated 2009 universe is all multi-adult households who answered the question regarding having a bank account (BUNBANKED) with a "Yes" or "No" response.
In 2011+ it is the first question of the supplement, followed by the two further screening questions (BFINPART and BUNBANKED). The stated universe for these years is all multi-adult households who agreed to answer supplement questions.
In several years, there are a small number of households that meet the stated universe requirements, but are NIU for BFINSHARE for an unknown reason. There are also households that are considered in-universe despite not meeting universe requirements. The number of non-conforming households per year is as follows:
2009: 44 NIU, 18 in-universe
2011: 119 NIU, 10 in-universe
2013: 78 NIU, 11 in-universe
2015: 87 NIU, 7 in-universe
2017: 95 NIU, 4 in-universe
