Description

VLSTATUS indicates whether the person spent time doing volunteering activities for any organization in the past year.

This variable is part of the Volunteer Supplement.

Comparability

Starting in 2017, the questionnaire text clarifies that volunteering activities also include activities carried out infrequently or for children’s schools/youth organizations.

Universe

  • Sep 2002 - Sep 2015: Persons age 15+ who responded to the supplement
  • Sep 2017: Persons age 16+ who responded to the supplement
  • Sep 2019, Sep 2021, and Sep 2023: Persons age 16+ randomly selected from households who responded to the supplement
