Description

VTAP indicates whether veterans participated in the Transition Assistance Program (TAP). The program began in 1991. TAP and D-TAP (for service members with disabilities) are sponsored by the U.S. Departments of Labor, Veterans Affairs, and Transportation to assist veterans and their families transition from military duty back to civilian life. The program originally consists of three days of workshops providing veterans with training and employment information within the six month period following military separation or retirement. The program received a redesign in 2011 and the revised program, Transition GPS, is expected to be implemented by the end of 2013.

Comparability

The CPS universe for this item beginning in 2001 includes only those who most recently served on active duty since 1991, the year the program began. The IPUMS item provided here creates a comparable category across years "No; not eligible." This category includes those originally not in universe prior to 2001 whose most recent years of active duty service was prior to 1991 as indicated by VLASTSERVE.

In 2003 and earlier, Veteran's supplement respondents were 18 and older; in 2005 and later, respondents to the supplement were 17 and older.

Beginning in 2021, respondents are no longer asked about D-TAP.
