Description
SCHLCOLL indicates whether respondents age 16 to 24 (or 16 to 54 for ASEC 2013 onward) were enrolled in high school or college during the previous week, and, if so, whether they were enrolled full- or part-time. College or high school students who were currently on holiday or seasonal vacation were to answer yes, but those not taking classes during summer vacation were to answer no. Interviewers first asked whether the person was enrolled in school during the previous week, then determined whether the person was attending high school or attending a college or university, and finally asked whether the person was a full-time or part-time student. In IPUMS-CPS, these responses are combined into the single variable SCHLCOLL.
Comparability
This variable is comparable over time. However, users should note the change in universe starting in ASEC 2013.
IPUMS-CPS contains several other variables related to schooling. For 1976-80, COLLEG75 identifies persons who reported college attendance as their main activity during March ASEC, 1975; for 1981, COLLEG80 identifies persons who reported college attendance as their main activity during March, 1980. Education attainment (completed schooling) is reported in three variables: EDUC99 (Educational attainment, 1990), for 1992 forward; HIGRADE (Highest grade in school), for 1962 and 1964-91; and EDUC (Education attainment recode), for 1962 and 1964 forward.
