Description
WSOTHSHFT reports respondents' usual shift schedule at their primary job, if the respondent does not work a regular daytime shift. Those who work a regular daytime shift are captured in the variable WSREGSHFT. Reasons for not working a regular daytime shift are captured in the variable WSSHFTREAS.
The "primary job" is defined as the job at which the respondent worked the most hours.
This variable is part of the Work Schedules Supplement.
Comparability
Starting in the 1997 survey, response categories indicating "Refusal", "Don't Know", and "Irregular schedule" were added. Also starting in 1997, times are used to define shifts: a "Regular daytime shift" occurs within the hours of 6am and 6pm, a "Regular evening shift" occurs within the hours of 2pm and midnight, and a "Regular night shift" occurs within the hours of 9pm and 8am.
In 1985, 6,214 individuals were in-universe for the Work Schedules Supplement but did not answer the supplement questions. These individuals have been coded as "No Response" if they met WSOTHSHFT universe criteria.
This variable is otherwise comparable across available samples.
