Description

VDISUNEMEV indicates whether respondents have ever had a military service-related disability that prevented them from getting or holding a job.

This variable is part of the Veterans Supplement

Comparability

In 1995, the Veterans Supplement respondent universe included veterans and active duty personnel. In all other years, only veterans were asked supplement questions. In 2003 and earlier samples, Veterans Supplement respondents were 18 and older; in 2005 and later, respondents to the supplement were 17 and older.

For 1995 and 1997, VDISUNEMEV was asked of all supplement respondents who reported having a service-related disability, were unable or unwilling to answer, or were asked but did not respond to the question about having a service related disability (VDISABLE).

In all other years only those who responded "Yes" to the service related disability question are in universe for VDISUNEMEV.

Beginning in 2021, the source question for VDISUNEMEV specifically refers to jobs that "met long term career goals."

Universe

  • 1987-1993: Veterans with a service related disabilty
  • 1995: Veterans and current armed forces members who did not state they had no disabilities
  • 1997: Veterans who did not state they had no disabilites
  • 1999-onward: Veterans with a service related disabilty
