- UnHarmonized Variables
UHRSWORK1 is a 3-digit numeric variable.
All samples: 99 = 99 hours per week or more
1989 - 1993 basic monthly and ASEC: 999 = No hours or NIU (Not in universe)
1994-onward basic monthly and ASEC: 999 = NIU (Not in universe), 997 = Hours vary
Description
UHRSWORK1 is the usual number of hours per week the respondent reports being at their main job. There is no time period specified, unlike for UHRSWORKLY, which specifies the reference time period as last year.
See the Hours Worked Variables Notes for an overview of the different actual and usual hours worked variables available.
Comparability
During the period 1989-1993 the code 999 means "None, not in universe or children or Armed Forces". Thus, there is no separate 0 value for this time period.
For the 1982-1988 basic samples and 1982-1987 ASECs, this question is part of the outgoing rotation group sample, and so the universe is restricted to those eligible for that sample. For these years, the question wording matches that of UHRSWORK1, so they are included here and not in UHRSWORKORG, which has slightly different wording.
In 2017, there is a significant increase in the number of cases with NIU/missing and decrease in the number of cases with hours equal to 0.
Universe
- 1982-1993: Employed civilians age 15+ in outgoing rotation groups. Excludes self-employed persons.
- 1994+ (non-ASEC): Civilians age 15+ who are employed and either at work or absent from work during the survey week.
- 1994+ (ASEC): All employed persons.
