Description
TWKAREA reports the type of area in which the respondent usually works. The answer to this question informed the questions on employer smoking policies that followed.
In 1992 and 1993, some unidentified respondents also answered this question. These individuals were expected to not be in the universe; however, they were included in the original data.
This variable is part of the Tobacco Use Supplement.
Comparability
TWKAREA is composed of one question prior to and including 2002. In 2003 forward, the variable is created from two questions. The first set of responses includes indoors, outdoors, different buildings or sites, in a motor vehicle, or somewhere else. The second set of responses helps clarify if the first response was "indoors".
Universe
- 1992-1993 (selected months): Self respondents age 15+ who are not retired or self employed.
- 1995-2007 (selected months): Self respondents age 15+ who are not retired or self employed, and worked last week.
- 2010-2019 (selected months): Self respondents age 18+ who are not retired or self employed, and worked last week.
- May 2011: Self respondents age 18+ who are not retired or self employed, and worked last week; MIS 5-8 only.
