Description

TBRESP indicates if the respondent was selected or eligible to be interviewed for the Tobacco Use Supplement (TUS) and completed the screener section of the supplement. Beginning in 2010, respondents who were eligible to be interviewed for the TUS were asked initial screener questions regarding their tobacco use, including if they have ever smoked 100 cigarettes in their life (TCIG100) or if they have ever tried a variety of different tobacco products. TBRESP only reports if they were eligible or selected to be interviewed and completed the initial portion of the TUS. Only respondents who indicated that they ever smoked 100 cigarettes or tried certain tobacco products were interviewed for the remainder of the TUS.

TBRESP should be used in conjunction with TBSUPPWT for the most accurate universe of TUS respondents.

This variable is part of the Tobacco Use Supplement.

Comparability

In 2010 and 2011, the eligibility for TBRESP was based on their age (18+) and whether they completed the corresponding month’s BMS interview. Additionally, in the May sample of 2011, only those in MIS 5-8 were eligible to be interviewed for the TUS.

Beginning in 2014, the Tobacco Use Supplement included random selection of respondents in larger households to reduce respondent burden. If the household had only 1 or 2 supplement eligible members, then those persons were selected for interview. If the household had 3 or 4 supplement eligible members, then 2 of them were randomly selected for interview. If the household had more than 4 supplement eligible members, then 3 of them were randomly selected for interview. TBRESP indicates whether they were selected for interview and eligible to respond to the TUS.
