Description

TSINCEQUIT reports the amount of time in days since a former smoker quit smoking completely. This variable is created from two components: the first is a number variable and the second is a unit variable. Respondents reported how long, in days, weeks, months, or years, since they quit smoking.

This variable is a part of the Tobacco Use Supplement.

Comparability

In 1992 and 1993 samples, a number of respondents reported it had been longer than one hundred years since they completely quit smoking. For these responses, TSINCEQUIT has a topcoded value of 99995.

Universe

  • 1992-1993: Smokers age 15 or older who have not smoked (or didn't know) daily for more than 6 months at a time or have quit smoking.
  • 1995-2007: Self-respondent former smokers age 15 or older.
  • 2010-2011, 2014-2022: Persons interviewed for the Tobacco Use Supplement (TBRESP) who are former smokers.
  • May 2011: Persons interviewed for the Tobacco Use Supplement (TBRESP) who are former smokers; MIS 5-8 only.
