Description
TRYSTOP reports whether a smoker has ever tried to stop smoking for one day or more with the intention of quitting. TRYSTOP combines the responses of two separate questions from the survey. One asks if the smoker tried to stop smoking for one day or more in the last 12 months, and the second is whether or not the smoker had ever tried to stop smoking for one day or longer.
In 1992 and 1993, some unidentified respondents also answered this question. These individuals were expected to not be in the universe; however, they were included in the original data.
This variable is part of the Tobacco Use Supplement.
Universe
- 1992-1993 (selected months): Self-respondents who are everyday or indeterminate smokers.
- 1995 -1999 (selected months): Self-respondents who answered that they smoked every day.
- 2001-2002 (selected months): Self-respondents who answered that they smoked every day or someday.
- 2003-2007: Self-respondents who answered that that they smoked every day or that they smoked 12 or more days in the last 30 days.
- 2010+: Persons interviewed for the Tobacco Use Supplement (TBRESP) who answered that that they smoked every day or that they smoked 12 or more days in the last 30 days.
- May 2011: Persons interviewed for the Tobacco Use Supplement (TBRESP) who answered that that they smoked every day or that they smoked 12 or more days in the last 30 days; MIS 5-8 only.
