Description
TFREQ reports the current smoking frequency of respondents.
This variable is part of the Tobacco Use Supplement.
Comparability
The universe of this variable changes in July of 2018 to include not only those who reported ever smoking 100 or more cigarettes, but also those who said they had never smoked 100 cigarettes, but were between the ages of 18 and 34. This leads to a marked increase in the frequency of the 'Not at all' category after this change.
This variable is otherwise comparable across all available years.
Universe
- 1992-1993 (selected months): People who had an entry in the question regarding age first started smoking regularly.
- 1995-2015 (selected months): Responded that they had smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime.
- May 2011: Responded that they had smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime; MIS 5-8 only.
- Jul 2018, Jan 2019, and May 2019: All civilian respondents ages 18-34, and those who smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime.
