Description
TDOCAD reports whether self-respondents had ever been advised by their doctor to stop smoking.
In 1992 and 1993, some unidentified respondents also answered this question. These individuals were expected to not be in the universe; however, they were included in the original data.
This variable is part of the Tobacco Use Supplement.
Comparability
The reference period for this variable changes in 2010. Prior to 2010 respondents may report whether a medical doctor advised them to stop smoking in the last 12 months or ever. In 2010 forward, respondents may only report whether a medical doctor advised them to stop smoking in the last 12 months.
Universe
- 1992-1993 (selected months): Self-respondents age 15+ who are everyday or non-daily or indeterminate smokers and responded to the question whether they had seen a doctor in the past year.
- 1995-2002 (selected months): Self-respondents age 15+ who are everyday or non-daily smokers and had seen a medical doctor in the past year.
- 2006-2007 (selected months): Self-respondents age 15+ who are everyday or non-daily smokers.
- 2010-2019 (selected months): Self-respondents age 18+ who are everyday or non-daily smokers and had seen a doctor in the past year.
- May 2011: Self-respondents age 18+ who are everyday or non-daily smokers and had seen a doctor in the past year; MIS 5-8 only.
