Description

TCIGMONTH reports the number of days in the past 30 days the respondent smoked cigarettes. Users should note that values exceeding 30, which are illogical, exist in the original data and are not removed in IPUMS-CPS.

This variable is a part of the Tobacco Use Supplement.

Comparability

This variable is comparable across all available years.

Universe

  • 1992-1993 (selected months): Self-respondent smokers age 15 or older.
  • 1995-2002 (selected months): Smokers age 15 or older who do not smoke daily.
  • 2003-2097 (selected months): Self-respondent smokers who do not smoke daily.
  • 2010+: Persons interviewed for the Tobacco Use Supplement (TBRESP) who are current smokers who do not smoke daily.
  • May 2011: Persons interviewed for the Tobacco Use Supplement (TBRESP) who are current smokers who do not smoke daily; MIS 5-8 only.
