Description

The average number of cigarettes smoked per day by an everyday smoker is given in TCIGDAY.

This variable is part of the Tobacco Use Supplement.

Comparability

In 1989, all eligible respondents who identified as current smokers were asked TCIGDAY. In all other samples, only self-responses are included.

This variable is otherwise comparable for all available years.

Universe

  • Sep 1989: Persons age 15+ who are currently smokers.
  • Sep 1995, Jan 1996, Sep 1998, May 1999, Nov 2001, Feb 2002, Nov 2003, Jan 2007, May 2006, Aug 2006, Sep 1992, Jan 1993, May 1993, May 1996, Jan 1999, Jun 2001, Feb 2003, and Jun 2003: Self-respondent everyday smokers.
  • 2010+: Persons interviewed for the Tobacco Use Supplement (TBRESP) who are everyday smokers.
  • May 2011: Self-respondent everyday smokers; MIS 5-8 only.
