Description

TAGESMK reports the age an individual first started smoking regularly.

This variable is part of the Tobacco Use Supplement.

Comparability

In 1985 and 1989 there are unusually high numbers of "No response" responses. No explanation was found for these higher "no response" frequencies, and these respondents were found to be in universe for TAGESMK.

This variable is otherwise comparable across all available years.

Universe

  • 1985: Persons age 16+ who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes
  • 1989: Persons age 15+ who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes
  • 1992-1993 (selected months): People who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes, and who did not claim to have never smoked regularly or not know what age they began.
  • 1995-2007 (selected months): Responded that they had smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime.
  • 2010+: Persons interviewed for the Tobacco Use Supplement (TBRESP) who responded that they had smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime
