This variable is a 2 digit numerical variable. The codes in this variable reflect the age in years of the respondent, except for the following special codes which are not numerically meaningful.
0 = Less than 1 year old
96 = Refused
97 = Don't Know
98 = No Response
99 = N.I.U. (Not in Universe).
Description
For respondents who reported that they never smoked cigarettes regularly (TAGESMK), TAGE1SMK reports the age when the respondent first smoked part or all of a cigarette.
This variable is part of the Tobacco Use Supplement.
