Description

SRCEARN reports the source of income (from wages and salary, self-employment, farm self-employment, or working without pay) for the job that the respondent held for the longest time during the preceding calendar year.

Comparability

This variable is comparable over time.

The amount of income that the respondent earned from the longest job held during the previous calendar year is reported in INCLONGJ. Total earnings during the previous calendar year from jobs other than the longest-held job are reported in OINCWAGE (for wage and salary jobs), OINCFARM (for farm self-employment), and OINCBUS (for self-employed business income).

The specific occupation in which the respondent worked for the longest time during the preceding calendar year is reported in OCCLY; the industry is reported in INDLY; and the class of worker (whether self-employed, an employee in private industry or the public sector, in the armed forces, or working without pay in a family business or farm) is reported in CLASSWLY.

The total numerical amount of income for the respondent from all sources during the preceding calendar year is reported in INCTOT. Total income from wages and salary, from self-employment in a non-farm business, and from self-employment on a farm during the preceding calendar year (regardless of the number of jobs involved or the length of time the jobs were held) are reported in INCWAGE, INCBUS, and INCFARM, respectively.
