Description

MHMAR1M indicates the month of the respondent's first marriage.

In 1976, there were values larger than 12 in the original data. These have been recoded to NIU and have a value of 5 for QMHMAR1.

In 1982, there is one male who reported a month of first marriage. This person's sex was allocated by IPUMS. See QSEX for details.

In 1986, there are two never-married women and six males who have reported a month of first marriage. These are in the original data.

In 1987, there are 24 non-females who have reported a month of first marriage. These are in the original data.

In 1988, there are 26 non-females who have reported a month of first marriage. These are in the original data.

In 1994, there is one male who reported a month of first marriage. This is in the original data.

Comparability

MHMAR1M is limited to ever-married women in all available samples, except for 1980 where ever-married men are included.

In 1980 and 1990, the MHMAR1M variable includes women who have been married only once. These women also have values for "month of last marriage" (MHMARLM); for these cases, values for MHMAR1M and MHMARLM are the same. In 1995, women who have been married only once are in-universe only for MHMARLM.
