Description
QMHMAR1 is a data quality flag for MHMAR1M and MHMAR1Y
This variable is part of the CPS Fertility Supplement.
Comparability
QMHMAR1 frequencies and coding in 1986, 1987, and 1988 samples are inconsistent with surrounding samples. The data is not reflective of the documentation in these samples. The data quality of this flag is suspect in these years. When values labeled as “allocated” in the documentation are taken as such, the allocation rate is suspiciously high. Frequency variation in unlabeled codes in the 1986-1988 period make it unclear if there is any coding error in the original CPS data. A code of 1 indicates allocation, while a value of 0 indicates no allocation. However, in addition to these codes there are also values of 2, 3, and Blanks in the original data. The 1987 and 1988 samples appear similar in frequencies, but the 1986 sample is inconsistent with both these and samples after 1988. IPUMS CPS has left allocations coded as printed in the codebook and recoded unlabeled codes as NIU. Researchers should exercise caution when using QMHMAR1 in 1986-1988 samples.
