INCDISAB
Income from disability benefits

Codes

9999999 = N.I.U. (Not in Universe).

The Census Bureau applies different disclosure avoidance measures across time for individuals with high income in this variable. Detailed explanations of these methods, topcodes, and replacement value and swap value thresholds are available here.

Description

INCDISAB indicates how much pre-tax income (if any) the respondent received from disability income during the previous calendar year.

CPS interviewers asked about income as a result of disability only if at least one member of the household had "a health condition or disability which prevents them from working or which limits the kind or amount of work they can do" or had "ever retired or left a job for health reasons." If the answer was affirmative, the interviewer asked which household member (or members) had such a health condition and whether this person received income as a result of this health condition, disability, or handicap.

Income due to disability could come from the following sources: worker's compensation; company or union disability; federal government civil service disability; U.S. military retirement disability; state or local government employee disability; U.S. Railroad Retirement disability; accident or disability insurance; black lung miner's disability; or state temporary sickness payments. Income from Social Security and payments from the Veterans' Administration were not included in INCDISAB; such payments were included in INCSS and INCVET, respectively.

Amounts are expressed as they were reported to the interviewer; users must adjust for inflation using Consumer Price Index adjustment factors.

Comparability

Apart from the effect of inflation, this variable is largely consistent from 1988 forward. From 1988 to 1994, respondents reported a single figure for the year. Beginning in 1995, respondents could report amounts for smaller time intervals, such as weekly, bi-weekly, twice monthly, or monthly, along with the number of payments.

For 1962-1967, the value of disability payments is subsumed in the INCUNERN variable, which encompasses all income from sources other than wages and salaries (INCWAGE), nonfarm businesses (INCBUS), and farms (INCFARM).

For 1968-1987, income from payments for disability from government funds (other than Social Security and Veterans' benefits) is included in the INCGOV variable, which combines income from government programs not specifically identified in other variables. Non-governmental payments for disability are included in INCALOTH, a residual category.

Comparability with IPUMS-USA

Social Security payments due to disability were included in the IPUMS-USA variable INCSS, beginning with the 1970 census. The INCSS variable in IPUMS-CPS also incorporates Social Security payments due to disability, beginning in 1968. Disability income from other sources is not tallied separately in IPUMS-USA and is included in the residual INCOTHER (other income) variable.
