Description

FSSTMPJAN indicates whether anyone in the household received SNAP or food stamp benefits during the month of January of the year in which the household was interviewed.

From 1995-2001, respondents were instead asked to report the last month in which members of the household received SNAP benefits (FSSTMPMO).

For samples from 1995 forward, the day on which respondents receive benefits in available in FSSTMPDAY.

This variable is part of the Food Security Supplement.

Comparability

In the April 1976 sample, empty households were not recorded. In other samples empty households appear as NIU for this variable.

Apart from universe changes, this variable is otherwise comparable across all available years.

Universe

  • 1976: All households
  • 1977: Households that reported receiving food stamps between January and July of 1977
  • 2002+: Households receiving SNAP/food stamps in past year.
