Description
BREMIT reports whether anyone in the household has gone to a place other than a bank to give or send money outside the U.S. Banks are defined as "banks, savings and loans, credit unions, and brokerage firms."
This variable is part of the Unbanked/Underbanked Supplement.
Comparability
In 2011 and 2013, only those who reported ever having ever sent money outside the U.S. without using a bank were asked BREMIT. Furthermore, 2011 and 2013 specifically ask about money given or sent to "relatives or friends living outside the U.S."
In 2015 and 2017, only households that reported sending money abroad in the last year were in universe for BREMIT.
In 2019, the question once again specifically asked about money sent to family and friends outside the US. All supplement responding households were in universe for BREMIT in 2019. Furthermore, in this sample nonresponses to Unbanked/Underbanked Supplement questions were allocated based on households with similar demographics. The data quality flag for BREMIT is QBREMIT.
Universe
- Jun 2011 and Jun 2013: Households that indicated anyone had ever gone to a place other than a bank to send money outside the US, report having or not having bank accounts, and have a respondent age 15 or older, who has knowledge of household finances.
- Jun 2015: Households that indicated someone in the household had sent money outside the US in the last year, report having or not having bank accounts, and have a respondent age 15 or older, who has knowledge of household finances.
- Jun 2017: Households that indicated someone in the household had sent money outside the US in the last year, answered whether or not a bank was used, report having or not having bank accounts, and have a respondent age 15 or older, who has knowledge of household finances.
- Jun 2019: Households with a respondent age 15 or older, who has knowledge of household finances.
