Description

BPSUPINT indicates whether a household is considered a respondent to the Unbanked Supplement. Households who are not respondents either decline to participate in the Supplement, are not eligible to participate in the Supplement (those under 15 and those in the armed forces), or are screened out of the Supplement because the household member who participated in the Supplement had insufficient knowledge about the household finances. The screening questions are BFINSHARE, BFINPART, and BUNBANKED, though the procedure differs by year.

Note that BPSUPINT does not identify who in the household answered the Unbanked Supplement questions, only whether the household is in the Unbanked Supplement universe.

Comparability

In 2009, BPSUPINT is valid at the household level and thus only indicates whether an individual is in a household that has any respondent. For 2011+, the variable differentiates between respondents and non-respondents in the same household.

The criteria by which a household is classified as a respondent changes between 2009 and 2011+.

In 2009, the survey participant has to answer either Yes or No (code 1 or 2) to BUNBANKED to be considered a respondent household.

In 2011+, the criteria to be considered a respondent are: (a) the survey participant is the single person over 15 in the household and answers Yes or No to BUNBANKED, or (b) the survey participant is in a household with more than one person over 15, the household members do not have shared finances (BFINSHARE code 3 or 4), and answers Yes or No to BUNBANKED, or (c) the survey participant is in a household with more than one person over 15, the household members have shared finances (BFINSHARE code 1 or 2), the survey participant participates at least some in household financial decisions (BFINPART code 1 or 2), and answers Yes or No to BUNBANKED.
