Description
BNOACCTREAS reports the main reason for not having accounts as identified by households without accounts.
Respondents were asked to report all reasons their household did not have an account. Those who could identify at least one reason were asked to identify the main reason in BNOACCTREAS.
This variable is part of the Unbanked/Underbanked Supplement.
Comparability
In 2009 this question was only asked of households that did not currently have, and had never had, a bank account. In 2011 the universe was broadened to all households that did not currently have accounts. From 2013 forward, all households that do not currently have accounts, and previously identified at least one reason why, are in universe.
The number of possible reasons for not having an account, as well as wording, varies between years.
In 2019 and 2021, nonresponses to Unbanked/Underbanked Supplement questions were allocated based on households with similar demographics. The data quality flag for BNOACCTREAS is QBNOACCTREAS.
