BCHECK12M reports whether anyone in the household has gone to a place other than a bank to cash a check that was received from someone else in the last 12 months. Banks are defined as "banks, savings and loans, credit unions, and brokerage firms."
This variable is part of the Unbanked/Underbanked Supplement.
In 2011 and 2013, only those who reported ever having gone to a non-bank location to cash a check were asked this question. This was not a requirement to be in universe for BCHECK12M in 2015 and on.
In 2019, nonresponses to Unbanked/Underbanked Supplement questions were allocated based on households with similar demographics. The data quality flag for BCHECK12M is QBCHECK12M.
