Description
BACCT12M indicates whether anyone in the household had a checking or savings account in the past 12 months. It is asked of households that do not currently have an account (see BUNBANKED) but that have at some point in the past had an account (see BACCTEV).
This variable is part of the Unbanked/Underbanked Supplement.
Comparability
In 2009-2013, the question asks when the last time anyone in the household had an account, with the options of "Within the last year" and "More than one year ago". In 2015+, the question asks whether anyone in the household had an account in the past 12 months.
This variable has been coded in IPUMS-CPS so that all responses are consistent with 2015+ question formatting. 2009-2013 "Within the last year" responses are coded "Yes" and "More than one year ago" responses are coded "No."
In 2019 and 2021, nonresponses to Unbanked/Underbanked Supplement questions were allocated based on households with similar demographics. The data quality flag for BACCT12M is QBACCT12M.

- Households with no bank accounts that previously had accounts and a respondent, aged 15 or older, who has knowledge of household finances.
