Description

DWNOTICE reports whether or not the respondent received a written notice in advance of losing his/her job, and how much time he/she was given before he/she was terminated.

This variable is part of the Displaced Workers Supplement.

Comparability

From 1984-1992, respondents who lost or left a job during the past five years are included in the supplement; from 1994 on, those who lost or left a job during the past three years are included.

Information about how much notice was given is unavailable in the 1986 supplement.

Universe

  • 1986-1992: Civilians age 20 or older who lost or left a job in the past five years because the company closed down, eliminated the shift or position, or had insufficient work.
  • 1994+: Civilians age 20 or older who lost or left a job in the past three years because the company closed down, eliminated the shift or position, or had insufficient work.
