Description

TRYSTOPN reports the number of times an everyday smoker has stopped smoking in the last 12 months because they were trying to quit smoking.

This variable is part of the Tobacco Use Supplement.

Comparability

In 2010 forward, "2" means "2 -3 times" instead of "2 times"; 3 means "4 or more times" instead of "3 times."

Universe

  • 1992-2007: Respondents who tried to stop smoking for one day or more in the last 12 months.
  • 2010+: Persons interviewed for the Tobacco Use Supplement (TBRESP) who tried to stop smoking for one day or more in the last 12 months.
  • May 2011: Persons interviewed for the Tobacco Use Supplement (TBRESP) who tried to stop smoking for one day or more in the last 12 months; MIS 5-8 only.
