ACTCCRD
Additional Child Tax Credit

Codes

99999 = N.I.U. (Not in Universe).

Description

ACTCCRD indicates the dollar amount the respondent received in Additional Child Tax Credit. An individual can claim the Additional Child Tax Credit in addition to the Child Tax Credit if the amount of the Child Tax Credit is greater than the amount of income tax owed by an individual. See the IRS Tax Tip 2011-29, February 10, 2011 for more information.

ACTCCRD, like other tax-related variables included in the ASEC CPS (ADJGINC, CAPGAIN, CAPLOSS, CTCCRD, EITCRED, FEDRETIR, FEDTAX, FICA, FILESTAT, MARGTAX, STATETAX, TAXINC, and household level variable PROPTAX) was not determined by direct questioning of respondents. Rather, values for these variables come from the Census Bureau's tax model, which simulates individual tax returns to produce estimates of federal, state, and payroll taxes. The model incorporates information from non-CPS sources, such as the Internal Revenue Service's Statistics of Income series, the American Housing Survey, and the State Tax Handbook. For more information about the model, see Current Population Reports, Series P60-186RD. The IPUMS-CPS staff welcomes further information from users about the interpretation of this variable or other tax-related variables in the ASEC CPS.

Amounts for ACTCCRD are expressed in dollars of the given year, rather than in constant dollars adjusted for inflation. Users can adjust for inflation using Consumer Price Index adjustment factors.

The 2021 expanded child credits were imputed for the 2022 CPS ASEC sample. The 2022 CPS ASEC sample added two new tax variables (UH_CDCCRD_A1 and UH_ADVCTC) and updated the definitions for FEDTAXAC, CTCCRD, and ACTCCRD. For more information, please view this working paper.
