INCUNERN
Income from Source other than earnings

Codes

99999 = N.I.U. (Not in Universe).
99998 = Missing.

See User Note for an explanation of these codes.

Description

INCUNERN indicates each respondent's income from sources other than wages and salary (INCWAGE) and self-employment in a business (INCBUS) or farm (INCFARM).

Amounts are expressed as they were reported to the interviewer; users must adjust for inflation using Consumer Price Index adjustment factors.

Comparability

Apart from the effects of inflation, this variable is comparable across years.

CPS interviewers asked about income from specific sources such as Social Security, interest and dividends, rent, and public assistance, but the amounts were combined in the INCUNERN variable.

The INCUNERN variable is included in IPUMS-CPS only for 1962-1967; more specific information on the types of unearned income is available in 1966-1967 only as dichotomous variables indicating receipt of five types (GOTSS, GOTINT, GOTDIVID, GOTRENT, and GOTWELFR).

After 1967, the residual unearned income variable was superseded by more specific information. For example, in 1968, INCSS, INCWELFR, INCGOV, INCIDR, and INCALOTH took the place of INCUNERN. Researchers who wish to use comparable income categories for the entire data series should add together all income categories other than INCWAGE, INCBUS, and INCFARM to create a variable equivalent to INCUNERN.

Comparability with IPUMS-USA

Apart from the effects of inflation, INCUNERN is comparable to the INCOTHER variable in IPUMS-USA for the 1960 census. For information on specific income categories that could be combined to match the INCUNERN variable, users should consult the documentation on INCTOT in IPUMS-USA and IPUMS-CPS.
