Description
AGEMARR reports each ever-married person's age at the time of first marriage.
CPS interviewers collected information about the date of first marriage for ever-married persons and filled in the month, decade, and year on the interview form. Using this information and information about the respondent's date of birth, age at marriage was calculated by the Census Bureau staff.
Comparability
For 1962, 1965, and 1967, AGEMARR is top-coded at age 45+. For 1968, the top-code is age 44+. Responses are given in single years up to age 88 for 1969-1971.
Comparability with IPUMS-USA
Like the CPS, the 1960, 1970, and 1980 censuses calculated age at first marriage from data on the respondent's date of marriage and date of birth. Unlike in IPUMS-CPS, IPUMS-USA consistently topcodes marriage age in the nineties.
Universe
