Description
WSOTPAY indicates whether a respondent is paid an overtime rate for any hours worked during a usual week. Examples of overtime rates include "time and a half" or "double time."
This variable is part of the Work Schedules Supplement.
Comparability
In 1976-1985, respondents were asked if they were paid for any of the hours worked last week. Starting in 2001, respondents were asked about a usual week of work.
Starting in 2001, response categories indicating "Refusal" and "Don't Know" were added.
From 1976-1978 there are small numbers of respondents who have valid WSOTPAY responses despite not meeting known universe criteria. In all of these cases, the respondent worked forty hours or less in the previous week.
In 1985, 6,214 individuals were in-universe for the Work Schedules Supplement but did not answer the supplement questions. These individuals have been coded as "No Response" if they met WSOTPAY universe criteria.
This variable has undergone many universe changes, which affect its comparability over time. See the Universe page for details.
