WSOTHRS is a 2-digit numeric variable.

96 = Refused
97 = Don't Know
98 = No Response
99 = N.I.U. (Not in Universe).

Description

WSOTHRS reports the number of work hours in a usual week for which the respondent is paid at the overtime rate. The variable WSOTPAY reports whether the respondent receives overtime pay at all in a typical week.

While this question was asked only of those who are usually paid overtime for some hours, note that some respondents provided an answer of 0 overtime hours.

This variable is part of the Work Schedules Supplement.

Comparability

In 1985, respondents were asked if they were paid for any of the hours worked last week. Starting in 2001, respondents were asked about a usual week of work.

Starting in the 2001 survey, response categories indicating "Refusal" and "Don't Know" were added.

In 1985, 6,214 individuals were in-universe for the Work Schedules Supplement but did not answer the supplement questions. These individuals have been coded as "No Response" if they met WSOTHRS universe criteria.

This variable is otherwise comparable across available samples.
