Description
WSHRSPREF indicates respondents' preferred mix of work hours and income. The pay rate is assumed to be constant, and they are asked whether they would prefer to work fewer hours (less income), more hours (more income), or the same number of hours as they currently work (same income). This question was asked of the respondent's primary job only.
The "primary job" is defined as the job at which the respondent worked the most hours.
This variable is part of the Work Schedules Supplement.
Comparability
In 1985, this question was only asked for self-respondents. Proxy respondents were not asked to answer this question on behalf of their household members. In 2001 this question was asked for both self- and proxy-respondents.
Starting in the 2001 survey, response categories indicating "Refusal" and "Don't Know" were added.
In 1985, 6,214 individuals were in-universe for the Work Schedules Supplement but did not answer the supplement questions. These individuals have been coded as "No Response" if they met WSHRSPREF universe criteria.
This variable is otherwise comparable across available samples.
Universe
- 1985: Persons age 14+ who are currently employed, and self-reported the supplement questions. Excludes proxy reports.
- 2001: Persons age 15+ that are currently employed, excluding self-employed persons
